Ashurst CC6 rescheduled for the 1st March!!!

Hi all!!!

Just to confirm, Totton have managed to square it with the forestry commission to rearrange the Ashurst CC6!!!  It will now take place on Sunday March 1st at the normal time of 09:30

All previous information applies:

[Map link: CC6 Race Map Ashurst, Grid location: Grid Ref: SU 33188 09858]

This year’s course is again based at the popular Ashurst Campsite off the main Ashurst to Lyndhurst Road. Accessible from both directions.

From the main entrance to the campsite you will be directed to park by our marshals on the day. Please follow their instructions and do not park on the grass or verges unless you are told otherwise. (This is the first time at the venue and the Forestry Commision are very sensitive about this).

The course approximately 8km long (5miles) and is made up of approximately 60% gravel tracks, 30% muddy paths and 10% wooded sections. Trail running shoes are recommended with a good grip. The course is not suitable for spikes.

The Start and Finish areas are located near the main toilet block in the campsite, (NOT open on the day sorry). There will be a refreshments area directly in front of the toilet block and the club tent area will directly in front of that, adjacent to the start point.

Drinks and cakes will be available but please bring your own drinking cup or mug.

The course map is attached for your information. The course heads out of the campsite, over the railway bridge and into Deerleap Enclosure. The course follows the gravel tracks and a muddy path to cross a footbridge and into Longdown Enclosure. Following a loop of that enclosure it retraces itself back to the campsite. The finish will be to the left of the start point.

As ever, please car share as much as possible as parking is limited.

The race will start at 0930 prompt and will be fully marshalled and marked out. The usual hazards apply!

This year we will be taking contributions to the local Food Bank: https://southamptoncitymission.co.uk/basics-banks.

Any contributions will be greatly appreciated and to give you an idea of items they want at the moment, they have written this list…. Basics Bank

Storm Dennis has the last word… CC6 CANCELLED :0(

Hi all,

It has been decided that sadly the weather situation, continued weather warnings and current ground conditions have led to the decision to cancel the CC6 this weekend at Ashurst.  The decision has been made for the following reasons…

  • the impending storm Dennis due to come in over the weekend
  • the car parking and campsite is mostly underwater
  • there are some trees already down following last weeks storm and there is potential for further tree falls

The plan is hopefully to reschedule the event prior to the final CC6 in Wilverley, but this is dependent on the Forestry Commission, so watch this space!

Many Thanks to Steve and the rest of Totton running club for keeping us informed and for making this tough decision – it has not been made lightly, but I think we can all agree the main thing is to ensure safety for both runners and marshals.

We hope to see you all before the next race in Wilverley – for more information and updates on potential rescheduling at Ashurst, check out Totton RC’s facebook page….

Cheers and happy running whatever you do this weekend – stay safe!!! :0)

Weather warnings – watch this space!

Hi All,

Just a quick heads up from the Totton crew regarding this weekends CC6 – due to more yellow warnings for wind and rain, there is slight uncertainty as to whether the race will go ahead – whilst we don’t mind adverse conditions such as mud wind and rain, obviously the safety of runners and marshals is the number one consideration :0)

So fingers crossed for improvements in the forecast!!! Keep an eye out for updates, the team will make a decision by Saturday.

Race no. 7…. 16th Feb…. Ashurst…. hosted by Totton RC… YEY!!!

An update for the next CC6 race at Ashurst Campsite for Sunday 16th February 2020, from Totton RC…

Latest Information: First CC6 of the year!!!

WADAC, Running Sisters and Southampton AC invite you to Race 5 of the CC6 race series at Badger Farm this Sunday 5th January, 9:30am start.  We will be starting a little further from our traditional start so please allow an extra 5 minutes from the car park to the start this time!

Directions: The race HQ and meeting area is on Whiteshute ridge at the orientation table (OS Grid Ref: SU465275), park at the Badger Farm Sainsburys (off Badger Farm Road), use the far end of the car park by the Community Centre and Friarsgate Surgery. We have notified the supermarket so you can park until 11am. Between the Community Centre and the rear of the supermarket are steps down, follow them which turns into a muddy trail (now with handrails) up onto the ridge (5 minute walk). You will notice the ridge has been enclosed as there are cattle on the grassland. This will mean we will be starting half way down the ridge, so the race Marshalls will escort you down at 9.25am from the HQ.  The facilities at the Community Centre and Sainsburys/Starbucks are for patrons only.

Course: The course is just under 5 miles long and undulating. There is a mixture of grass, mud, chalk, gravel and very limited tarmac. We recommend trail shoes. The course starts half way down the ridge this year and you will be running upwards (away from Winchester), the route takes you over the Badger Farm Road footbridge and then down a long descent along Compton Down  followed by an ascent onto Hurdle Way (a gravel path) back towards the grassland meadows behind Olivers Battery then via some narrow paths and eventually back onto Whiteshute Ridge, were you get a chance to return up the way you came at the start of the course and finish above Sainsburys. The course includes several narrow (but open) gates on Whiteshute Ridge and later on 2 kissing gates at the top of a short (but steep) wooded hill at the Compton Down end of the course. Expect the usual hazards of roots, uneven trails and especially low hanging branches.

Cows: We will be starting in an enclosed area which may have cattle on the day. We have modified the race this year to ensure runners avoid the cows at the start (when you will be in a large group), but you will pass them at the end of the race. The White British Cattle are friendly enough but be mindful of them. Our marshals will be at all the gates onto and off the enclosed fields, their job will be to make sure you are safe AND ensure the cows don’t try to leave their field.

Be aware that there may well be other members of the public using the area, dog walkers and horse riders etc. please show them courtesy.

Finally, while we will be supplying water at the end of the race, in order to reduce our environmental impact, we would encourage you to bring your own drink or reusable cup to the race.

Happy New Year!
