Race 7 report: Itchen Valley #2

Well, the weather held true to form and gave us a wet day! Moreover, the grassy areas of the course were saturated and boggy, providing some ‘proper’ cross-country conditions for us on the day!

Leading the men home was Jack England of Winchester Fit Club, closely followed by fellow Wintonian Adrian Faulty for Winchester Running Club. Henry Lloyd Williams rounded oout the top-3 for Lymington Triathlon Club.

On the ladies side, another strong performance for Caitlin Peers saw her take her second win of the season for Southampton Triathlon Club, followed by Winchester Running Club’s Eleanor Swire and Hardley Runners’ Poppy Tanner in 3rd.

Race 6 report: Badger Farm

Race 6 of the season saw 190 runners turn out to represent their clubs and compete over this 7.4k course. Well done everyone and especially to those who also raced the HCCL fixture the previous day.

Despite the seemingly never ending rain, the course was in good condition other than a few small muddy patches. With over 150m of elevation gain and descent it’s tough on the legs, but I heard lots of comments on how much everyone enjoyed it!

Leading the men home was William Feline of Stubbington Green, with Daniel Parker-Hales of Hardley in 2nd and Daniel Latham of Chandler’s Ford Swifts in 3rd. Caitlin Peers lead the ladies home with Tina Christmann in 2nd, both for Southampton Triathlon Club, followed by Poppy Tanner of Hardley Runners in 3rd.

Top scoring teams were Stubbington Green’s Men and Southampton Triathlon Club’s Ladies, both taking their first wins of the season!

A huge, huge thank you to Winchester fit club, Winchester RC, Southampton AC, Solent Running Sisters and WADAC for putting on a fantastic event for us this morning. Great range of cakes – the vegan chocolate cookies were 🔥

Looking forward to seeing you all in a few weeks time at our final race of the season!

CC6 Race 6 instructions: Whiteshute Ridge, Winchester

Sunday 8th February 2026

RACE INSTRUCTIONS

Directions: The race HQ and meeting area is on the top of Whiteshute Ridge at the orientation table (OS Grid Ref: SU465275 what three words riverside.shorts.replying).

Please use public transport if you can, or car share where possible and park at Pitt Road park-and-ride which is free on Sundays (Romsey Road Winchester, S022 5PR) and is a 15-20 minute walk from Badger Farm Sainsburys. On this occasion the race organisers have not been given permission to park at Sainsburys. Do be aware there is a 2-hour time limit to park there and is for customers only.

Access to Whiteshute Ridge is between the Community Centre and the rear of the supermarket. Walk down the set of steps next to the Community Centre, then turn right onto a muddy trail which climbs uphill onto the the ridge (a 5-minute walk).

Please note there are no toilets available at this event. The facilities at the Community Centre and Sainsburys/Starbucks are for customers only.

Course: The course is approximately 5 miles long. There is a mixture of grass, mud, chalk and limited tarmac. We strongly recommend trail shoes. The course starts with a loop on the ridge before crossing the bridge over Badger Farm Road, down towards Compton, then a steep ascent to Hurdle Way, a single long circuit behind Olivers Battery and culminating in another modified loop on the ridge, culminating with a climb back to the finish. Expect the usual hazards of tree roots, uneven trails and low hanging branches. Note there are several changes to the course this year, so please study the course map carefully. Marshals will be on the course to direct you. Further course changes may be made in the event of adverse weather in the days before the race.

Cows: We will be starting in an enclosed area which is very likely to have cattle on the day. The White British Cattle are friendly enough but be mindful of them. Our marshals will be at all the gates onto and off the enclosed fields, their job will be to make sure you are safe AND ensure the cows don’t try to leave their field.

It is a short walk from the race village to the start so runners will need to start walking down at 9.25am and we may need to modify the start on the day due to unexpected cattle movement. Be aware that there may well be other members of the public using the area, dog walkers and horse riders etc. please show them courtesy. While we will be supplying water at the end of the race, we encourage you to bring your own drink and reusable cup to the race. And finally, we ask that you do not litter and take your rubbish home with you.

Thank you and have a great race!

Course description:
Beginning at the half-way gate on Whiteshute Ridge, runners will complete a small lap of the ridge before exiting onto the adjacent wooded path which climbs up the top of the ridge. From here, runners will cross the tarmac bridge over Badger Farm Road and turn left to follow the long descent towards Compton.

The course continues with a steep ascent to Hurdle Way, then joins the temporary bridle path which descends to Oliver’s Battery fields. Please note, the temporary bridle path has some short steep descents with loose stones underfoot.

Following a lap of Oliver’s Battery fields, runners will return to the ridge via a different track than the narrow path next to the school as previously. Alterations to the course may be required at short notice.

Race 5 report: Itchen Valley 1

Race 5 and our first of 2026 and we had some unseasonably mild weather on the day. Lots of rain in the run up to the event meant the ground was slippery and boggy in places – by all accounts a ‘proper’ cross-country race this one!

281 runners turned out to represent their clubs and compete over this 7.4k, 3 lap course on a mixture of gravel, woodland paths and grass.

Leading the men home was Max Costley of Southampton AC, with Jack England of Winchester Fit Club in 2nd and his teammate Ross Durston in 3rd. Caitlin Peers lead the ladies home for Southampton Triathlon Club, Followed by Caitlin Hooton from Lordshill Road Runners and Eleanor Swire of Winchester RC. Clearly, there are some fast Caitlin’s about!

The top scoring teams were Winchester Fit Club’s men, making it five-from-five and Lordshill Road Runners ladies with their first win of the season.

Huge thanks to all those Volunteers from Stubbington, Hamwic and Netley Abbey who turned out early this morning to make the event so successful and enjoyable for everyone involved. Also, to those who so generously provided cakes for runners at the finish line.

Looking forward to seeing you all in a few weeks’ time at Race 6: Badger Farm!

Race 4 report: Holmsley

Race 4 and final race of 2025 and we were met by rather pleasant mild weather which was of course a big relief after last year’s storm forced cancellation of the race. The course was in pretty good nick thanks to some last-minute spring cleaning and branch clearing! A good mix of road and trail shoes being chosen amongst the runners.

245 runners turned out to represent their clubs, and all headed off in pursuit of the Santa themed lead cyclist. Everyone seemed to pick up a good amount of mud as they made their way through the forest course and am sure were overjoyed to be met by a blustery headwind for the last ½ mile chase to the finish tape.

Leading the men home was Jack England of Winchester Fit Club, with Richard Crawford of Lordshill Road Runners in 2nd and Edward Pottrill of Hedge End Running Club rounding out the top 3. Poppy Tanner lead the women home for Hardley Runners, Followed by Bexy Dew from Totton Running Club and Caitlin Hooton of Lordshill Road Runners.

The top scoring teams were Winchester Fit Club’s men, making it four-from-four and Totton Running Club ladies with their first win of the season.

Huge thanks to all those Volunteers from New Forest Runners, Lymington Tri & Lymington Athletics who turned out early this morning to make the Holmsley CC6 we hosted so successful and enjoyable for everyone involved. Also, to those who so generously provided cakes and bananas, including those who were unable to be there.

On behalf of Chairman Jim and Captain Rod, thank you very much!

Looking forward to seeing you all in a few weeks’ time at Race 5: Itchen Valley Country Park!

Merry Christmas!

Race 4 Instructions: Holmsley

New Forest Runners, Lymington Triathlon Club & Lymington Athletics invite you to Race 4 of the CC6 series on 14 December 2025.

The venue is located around the Holmsley Campsite, BH23 7EQ. What3Words:

//surveyors.nuggets.improvise

The race begins promptly at 09:30hrs. Please arrive in good time as we are on the west side of Hampshire, although the venue is easy to access from the A35 and the A31.
The gates to access Holmsley campsite will be open from 08:00hrs. Please follow the directions of the parking marshals. The gates will be closed promptly at midday, so please do not go off for a long walk after the race as the barrier will be locked until well into the New Year!

We will be using the campsite for parking and all Club pop up tents and flags. There are no changing facilities but there will be a couple of mobile toilet units. As the event could be monitored by Forestry England please use the WC facilities provided. Please feel free to bring your own cups and drinks. Cakes will be provided. There will be bins around but please ensure any litter is cleared away or taken away.

The course is undulating on mainly gravel tracks but there are sections that contain tree roots or are very uneven/rough. With the amount of rain we have had there will be standing water and mud. The distance is approximately 8k.

The start is a 5-10 mins walk back to an area where you arrived, where there is plenty of room to spread out. You will set off along the grass for approx. 200 metres, where you will be directed to head right along an undulating rough path before heading off towards the entrance to the Enclosure. There will be marshals along the whole course to guide you along any change of direction, otherwise please stick to the main gravel track. There will be 2 minor road crossings which will be closely managed by marshals. The last half a mile brings you back around to a sprint finish along by the entrance to where you parked.

We hope you have an enjoyable run.

Many thanks
Jim (Chair, NFR)
Rod (NFR CC6 Captain)
Sandra (Lymington Tri Club

Race 3 Report: Roundhill

Race 3 of the season and we are still seeing unseasonably mild weather. The course was in good condition with even the grassy track section remaining a track, rather than bog like previous years! A good mix of road and trail shoes being chosen amongst the runners.

310 runners turned out to represent their clubs, which was 80 more than we saw for Race 2 and 2 more than the same race last year, despite it falling of rememberance Sunday. We held a minute’s silenece prior to the race start which I think was a great decision from the oragnising clubs so thank you for that.

Leading the men home was Shaun Egan of Totton RC, with Ben Smith of Winchester Fit club in 2nd and Richard Crawford of Lordshill Road Runners rounding out the top 3. Rebecca Lord lead the women home for Stubbington Green, Followed by Poppy Tanner and Alice Curtin of Hardley Runners.

The top scoring teams were Winchester Fit Club’s men, making it three-from-three and Hardley Runners’ ladies with their first win of the season.

A great turnout for Hamwick Harriers!

Our huge thanks go out to all of the volunteers from Halterworth Harriers, Romsey Road Runners and Southampton Tri Club who helped to organise and marshall the event. Also thank you to everyone who baked or bought cakes for the finish – they went down a treat by all accounts!

Looking forward to seeing you all in a few weeks’ time at Race 4: Holmsley!

You can view the race results here

Race 3 Instructions: Roundhill Campsite

What3Words is ///guardian.collected.orange

Parking will be strictly at the campsite. Please car share if possible. The car park will open for runners at 8.15am.

There will be an area at the campsite designated for tents and flags. Toilets will also be available at the campsite.

There will be cakes available after the race. However, please bring your own water/cups. There will be a limited supply of water provided.

The course is about 4.4 miles long, and a figure-of-eight circuit. The majority of the course comprises gravel tracks, but there is a short section on grassy tracks that can be very muddy (it was on Friday when checked and there is plenty of rain forecast for this week). There will be plenty of marshalls on the course. Please follow instructions from them at all times. The course map is attached.

The route is also open to the general public, so please be courteous to any others using the tracks, such as dog-walkers, pedestrians and cyclists. As the route is in the forest, there may also be horses and other animals out on the course outside of our control.

Please note that the race start is approximately 15-minutes walk from the car park, so please arrive in good time. There is also a road to cross on the way to the start, so please take care crossing over. There will be marshalls in place at the crossing.

9th November is Remembrance Sunday, so we will be having a minute’s silence before the race start.

As usual, we will be giving out barcode tokens at the finish. Scanning will be done at the race finish, not at the campsite, so please make sure that you have your parkrun barcode with you when you run.

Spectators are very welcome, including their dogs, though please ensure that owners clear up after their dogs.

The car park will be locked at 11.30am. If you wish to remain in the forest after the race, please ensure that your car is moved to another car park.
